As the title asks…who here has ordered a mystery box? Are they worth the risk? Been considering trying it out but worried I will get a box full of the stuff that the retailer is unable to sell on their site or multiples of the same lame corals. I would be thoroughly ticked off if I opened it up and got multiple frags gsp and xenia and maybe one torch or hammer. My plan is to make my selection and resell the rest from my frag tank.

Really kinda surprised this is a thing...doesn't sound like it's in your best interest or the animals'

You should not be buying "mystery" animals. The ones selling them should be ashamed of themselves.

What is going on? Are we dealing in animals like it is candy? Should we do mystery dogs and cats?

Stop this. Shame on the seller.
Honestly, a mystery box isn’t all too bad as long as the seller says specifically what MAY be in the box (I.E. SPS, LPS, Softies, NPS, Specific Fish Family, Specific Size of Fish). I agree if you get a mystery box and have no idea what will be in it.

When I go into my LFS for frags honestly all I said at first was my tank size, parameters ect… and then let them pick the SPS that would suit me best (Granted the guys in that store know WAY much more than the average LFS worker). Ever since then all I’ve said is “Surprise me” and what coral I’m interested in attempting.

I don’t think I’d ever really do that with fish.

Mystery boxes are a sales tactic for when you have stuff you can’t sell and have been sitting on for awhile and you spin it

No I think you need to know exactly what animal you are buying. It's not enough to know if it is a small or a large dog. Or a cat with short hair or long hair.

"I.E. SPS, LPS, Softies, NPS, Specific Fish Family, Specific Size of Fish" is not enough.

I am not against riding on the edge and trying something funky. But if you do.. you should research and have a clue about what you are getting in too. A "mystery box" is not even close to knowing what you are getting in too.

Nobody is going to be able to tell you exactly what species of Acropora, Seriatopora, Stylophora ect… that you are going to get. It’s almost impossible to ID a specific coral from SPS and get it right every time.

If you know the family of fish/coral/whatever that species is from you will get a decent idea of what care it may have. No matter what, one fact that people need to come to terms with is:
The care level of a fish will most likely be the same reason all across the board.
If you have a good amount of experience with fish or animals of a higher care level than other marine animals then you often know their general identical care across the board.

This is coming from someone who has worked in an LFS for a good few years and has a decent of knowledge on different marine animals of different care levels (specifically the fish).

I completely respect your opinion, But IMO there is a niche were there is very little risk to the buyer or the livestock at least as far as corals go. Some people run multiple mixed reef systems or large frag tanks and will have plenty of space to stock any "risky" corals that may be sent, like acans or chalices etc. And should have little trouble handling their care as far as flow, lighting, food, and chemistry, etc. Furthermore if they have the group its in SPS,LPS,Softy. Virtually any reefer could purchase one and know very well what to expect, I recently got a "Mystery Zoa" from TSA and low and behold I unboxed a Gatorade zoa. Something that I probably would have overlooked in the live sale but really love in person. Obviously it would've been annoying if it were a colorless palythoa, But if you order from a reliable vendor your likely to get something interesting at the very least. Plus with anything If you don't like not knowing you don't have to get it, I don't find the practice inherently wrong.

Honestly, if you have a good dealer of a specific type of coral you want (NPS, SPS, LPS ect..) just go to them and do what I do. Chances are if the LFS is reputable then they’ll be able to give you coral that are within a certain price gap, the level you’re after (Easy, Moderate, Expert ect..) and hopefully still satisfy you in the random selection of coral. Plus, you’ll be able to see the state the coral is in before it gets to you.

I will admit, when I come home with SPS it’s often 3-4 frags of different species and I’m satisfied (Albeit I have lost a few frags - mainly due to stressing factors in a 20g tank).

I'm not certain I agree here. Any shelter animal is pretty much a mystery dog or cat and my pups have all been model citizens thus far.

The 'mystery' is the color morph generally because all the mystery boxes I've seen are sps, lps or softie specific. You tell them style and they ship only that type of coral.

Good seller with high quality corals, healty animals and reasonable prices dont need mystery boxes.....

They have problem to supply demand, not increasing it with some snake oil in box sale.....

Just another level of human stupidity and greed, when they think that in 20$ "box" they will get premium corals worth hundreds of money... You wont.

In 1000 boxes, sure, someone will get premium stuff, and that person is gonna ensure another 1000 sold boxes, when he shows online what he got for few money....

Get real.... This is not some package, combo, so, yes, you will get one frag that you dont want, but, price is right for 9 other that u want.... This is simply stupid.....

I'll stop after this post. My oppinion is clear, no need to kill the fun for people who like the mystery box.

A mystery box is like a topic on this forum.

"Hey you all,

I got a tank with salt water. It has a light, but I need some coral. Can anbody sell me some coral? I don't care what kind of coral, I just need some coral.

Ow, and if you know what they eat, that would be nice. I want to feed them.

Thanks!"

That’s just the normal UK LFS if I’m honest, I only know of one LFS that doesn’t bring some form of nasty invert in the tank.

I don’t think you can/should compare a coral with a dog or cat with a coral which is much less complex. Corals are simpler forms of life when compared to other animals.
