I'm upgrading to a 40g but decided to go all new rocks and sand. I've got 20lbs of KP Aquatics aquacultured live rock coming in tomorrow. I'm thinking of going with 10lbs of the Real Reef stuff and seed them off the KP rocks. Supposedly this stuff is cured in FW for atleast 12 weeks and another 12-16 in saltwater. It remains to be seen how much die off there is since shipping will be standard unlike overnight with the live rock. Anybody have any experience with these? Are they worth the extra cost over those dry painted rocks?

I have a 5 year old biocube that was set up with real reef brand rock and it has done fantastic with just about zero issues. My current 40 breeder project has about 20 lbs of KP and a few pounds of real reef, it's a great combo ;) the real reef rock is just seeded with bacteria, it typically arrives damp wrapped in newspaper there will be no die off from it.

I used about 130-140 lbs. in my 233 and 30-40 lbs in my 66, of the Real Reef rock.
I really like it.
I got it about a year ago.

I’ve bought 15 pounds of it for a 25G and couldn’t be happier. Doesn’t look fake and color is awesome. I cured LR in tub for two weeks just to be safe but probably unnecessary.

I looked through your build thread and it definitely gave me a better visual idea of how much 20 lbs of the KP rocks will look like. I might go with 15 or even 20 of the real reef rock as I like a little more rock.

Even though I like my Real Reef Rock there is a small issue.
When I ordered it from Live Aquaria and couple years ago, they were having a black Friday sale so I ordered extra. I'm really glad I did. These were the bigger 40lb. boxes and I was shocked at how much breakage there was.
So ordering a little extra probably isn't a bad idea.
