Who is keeping clams under a Kessil?

who has clams under kessil? and what type of clam is it ? i have kessil A360W-E over my cube with all LPS and think im ready for a clam

Any idea what your PAR is on the sand bed (or wherever you're planning to put it)? Also, what kind of clam do you think you'd get?

Just noticed this became a thread lol I have no idea to be honest all i keep is LPS and i would like a Max or Cor from what i read those two are less demanding the tank has been up for 7 years all i have is LPS

i moved my wwc bounce into the shade it was directly under the kessil so i can easily put a shelf rock in that spot for a Maxima

I've never used a Kessil, so I'm not totally sure, but I would think you'd be ok. Let's tag the #reefsquad to see if we can get some help.

Personally I have not, but I have seen clams under kessil before and they look well.

the 360 is fine but it is a question of the par Or lux in the spot you want it.

it would be directly under the kessil with moderate flow i might have to increase the intensity tho my shrooms tend to stretch for more light. reason its low to keep the acans from morphing.

I definitely think that would be fine. If it's right under the light especially, you should be good IMHO.

youll have to decide on light level period, and choose. a low light animal isnt going to live with a high light animal.
Id look into a $16 lux meter and I can tell you. esp if you dont know if its actually high or low.

when you were researching you clam it was said maximas take down to the 150Par?

Yes. It was anecodotal I think, but that was what was stated. Seeing as how many people keep them on the sand bed, I'd say that's probably the case more often than we are aware of...but beware that at 100 PAR on the sand bed, they might climb the walls...

Ok i will definitely by a PAR meter then before or just might wait for a clam for my upgrade this upcoming year will be getting a Rimless Planet Aquarium or a 350 Redsea Reefer that will allow me to house and place animals in different locations than be limited in space like i am now

@mdbannister Maximas are fine on rocks correct but Derasa is sand bed mostly from the research I have done

You could probably rent a PAR meter easier than buying one for this (check with your club or LFS), or you could use a lux meter to ballpark it (like @saltyfilmfolks recommends). I think if this is the only reason you're buying the PAR meter, you'd do better to buy a lux meter ($15 vs. $199).

That's my understanding, but I'm no clam expert by any means. However, in my reading, that's what I've read. @Tahoe61 knows far more than I do about clams (I think @saltyfilmfolks does as well).

Ok perfect ill ask around with the locals for a PAR meter or just spend the 15 bucks lol and yeah I read on clams occasionally and finally decided to pull the trigger since all my LPS are doing amazing so why not! just need to decided on what type of clam would be best

I found derasas to be hardier than maximas, but I like Maxima colors better.

I'm interested in this, too. I have three A360WEs in my tank in my 125 gallon system. I also have two 80w T5s installed. Now that the darned flame angel is out of the DT, I would like to try a clam. My PAR readings range 100-125 in the sandbed to 250-300 right under the water surface. I will be following thai discussion to learn more before taking the clam plunge.
