So, I’m about a month into cycling my 12 gallon Nuvo tank, it has built in filtration but I’m also planning on adding a custom sump with a skimmer. I’m planning on a beautiful mostly colorful coral tank, but I wanted something exotic to pull it all together. And I stumbled upon frogfish! So I’ve decided to male this a species specific tank.

I have been researching this for HOURS and I can’t seem to find any good websites about frogfish!I found parameter numbers and all, but nothing solid on care! What kind of frogfish can I keep in my tiny tank? Is there anything I should get outside of what I needed for a reef for the frogfish?

I highly doubt you even bothered to do a google search, let alone hours of research. There's metric tons of info out there about keeping frogfish. Here's a sample of worthwhile reads from the first page of search results.

Sorry, I guess I don't like when people claim they couldn't find any info about something that clearly has tons of info readily available. I'm always willing to help in any case.

Alls good, I don`t know the persons circumstances , glad you could get them a great start!! Have a great weekend!!

I found how to set up the aquarium for this specific fish, care and food. My issue is I can’t find what type I can fit in my tank, which is the most important part to setting up the tank correctly. Maybe my wording was off but you seriously don’t need to be rude like that. If you’re frustrated don’t comment, don’t belittle me.

Ah I see. Well definitely stay away from commerson's anglers, they get the size of a melon. Look into Antennarius maculatus and A. picta. There's also some dwarf species out there that are available from time to time.

I promise I did research. I didn’t just hop on here. I also went to a lfs and no one there was helpful.

The a. Pictus as in the hairy frogfish?

Check out live aquaria. They have the dwarf species, but last I checked they need at least a 20-25 gallon. Don’t quote me as I was reading up on them for my Lagoon a bit ago, the live food and short lifespan (1 year usually) turned me away and into the aspect of making a gorgeous acan/blasto tank once my stand arrives.

My mistake. Painted frogfish? I looked into them but it said they would outgrow my nano

these are the only two for a nano system. They recommend 20gallons minimum like I said earlier, if you look up inappropriate reefer on YouTube, he had one named Mochi in a 17g dropoff. I think your tank may be too small for an angler from everything I’ve read about them. Just my .02

I agree that 12g is on the small side for the common species. If you’re really he’ll bent on putting a frogfish in there, I’d look into the Pygmy species. They just sometimes require more patience in terms of training them to eat non living foods.

I’m beginning to think it may just wait for an upgrade. I don’t want to smush anything into a tank that’s too small, I have read lots of things on them in nanos, but I havnt found anything that would live comfortably In a nano.

I was reading about them in 8 gallons and smaller. I can’t imagine one in that

There’s a lot of different species that would be comfortable in a nano tank, you just can’t always have too many different fish. Many nano gobies, clownfish, blennies, and cardinal fish could happliy live in your tank, just not all of them at once.

I only wanted one fish, two if it’s the right species. My main focus is the corals, but I wanted something out of the ordinary. I’ve kept clown fish and damsels. I want something different

This guy was on DD but has sold:https://m.liveaquaria.com/divers-den/product/403907/pygmy-tuberculated-angler

These come around from time to time and could be fine in a 12g. Any others like a warty or painted would need a larger tank. These can be cool for the right person, keeping one in a reef with the corals as primary might work. They will not entertain you much, outside of eating. I believe they should be kept on a live diet; any that I've seen eating a dead only diet, don't live long. They are much more active when their tank is a hunting ground, so live mollies and some live ghosties allow you to really see their personality. To watch them hunt, stalk, and use their lure is the only reason to keep one of these; not feeding them from a stick. Keeping them in a softy or lps reef would be preferred to a sps reef. They would prefer less flow and lower light. Here's a painted angler I kept in a reef.
