Glass-Holes 700 gph overflow kit is perfect for a 40B.....even comes with the bit to drill the hole. HERE's a video about the overflow.


EDIT TO ADD: Just to clarify the gaskets in the video. One gasket goes up against the flange on the bulkhead. The second gasket goes between the glass and the overflow. There is no gasket with the nut.

The synergy is the one I would get. I bought a Glassholes unit 700 gph and it was loud. As it does not contain a bean return box on the outside of the tank. You have to run the water high in the overflow to quite the Glassholes unit down The synergy is well built just saw the one a club member purchased for his tank and it is set up with a bean return box on the back of the tank. So it is real quite.

I love the look of the Synergy one and I hear they have amazing quality but $200 is a lot for just an overflow for me.

Shep but it also has a Bean overflow box for the rear of the tank. The Glassholes just has a overflow box and a 1 1/2" 90 elbow. Not the whole Bean animal quite box for the rear of the tank. Glassholes one box - Synergy two boxes. Glassholes Noisey -Synergy Silent

We have the glass holes overflow in our 40b n works well and we use a dc return pump so we can adjust flow rate this made for a quiet setup for us.

They say it's dead silent. I have no hands-on knowledge, just what I've heard.

Now with Glass-Holes, some have noise problems, but I really think it's a simply a matter of adjusting flow to get it silent. Mine is silent....but I have the 1500 gph overflow.
