This is the story of a guy that has never had a fish tank before in his life, starting an aquaculture facility after a diving hoilday... I wish I was brave enough to follow a dream like this...and do something with fish or coral.

Anyone else wish they could do this?

Wait a dag gone minute..... you cant follow your dream unless you got serious BANK. What was Tonys networth before he fell into this hobby in Australia?

Yeah, Id love to follow about 20 dreams of my own but whos going to let me borrow $250,000 in startup costs just to start a single dream?

Knock knock, hello? Anyone have $250k laying around?

Rich get richer becoming dreammakers......while the middle class just die off with a wishlist in their dead hand with no capital

Its a described- A DREAM. many of us only wish

I think it generally unwise to turn a hobby into a business. Nothing quite like the drudgery of running a business to suck all of the fun out of the hobby. Pass.

I don't know why you loath people who have more than you. This guy took a chance on a business, made it successful, and is doing reefers and the environment a good cause. Sounds like you have some issues you need to take care of.

He only hates the system bud.

The system that has brought the most people out of poverty in the shortest amount of time in our recorded history?
That system?
While I agree Skim has some issues, I agree with what he's saying about how it is much more difficult to nearly impossible for someone that wasn't born into wealth to launch a successful business. If you don't see that the system is set up for the rich to get richer and the poor to foot the bill, you're not paying attention.

For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. Matthew 25:29

This system is the one that allowed my parents to sacrifice their life and time so that I did not have to go off to child hood labor.
This system is the one that allowed me to be in / out of welfare in high school to go borrow money and take schooling.
This system is the one that allowed me to have the freedom to choose my schooling and now be well off.
This system is the one that allowed me to now return that to my community and help those in need.
This system is the one that allowed my children not to be sold into childhood labor due to my sacrifices now.

I am thankful that I am even allowed to remotely think about being given the choice to utilize my forfathers sacrifices in a useful way.
Is it perfect? No, but it is by far the best we have ever had, and I am forever grateful to be alive in a time where I don't have to decide if I want to eat my own children or not.

This life and world owe you nothing, it is only by the grace of western civilization (System) that you have been given the choice to speak light onto darkness.

I will not post a followup after this one, as this thread has been wildly derailed.

That video is a vision of hell.

I remember many years ago I had a friend that opened a fish store and he turned it into one of the best in the country.

One day I asked him when was the last time he sat down looking at a fish tank. He couldn't remember.

lol? I don't see where anyone said it's impossible to get out of the mud. But the fact is it's easy to make money when you already have money. I don't see where anyone said that they are owed anything. No doubt society has come leaps and bounds in terms of progress but does that mean we should stop trying to improve? It's already perfect so we should just stop right?

/If you cared about not derailing a thread you wouldn't have posted.

Idiot
Not necessary name calling.

Besides, derailing this nice thread.
.....

But, if you will, one can look at Musk, Schultz, Gates, Jobs, Nooyi, etc... the list is forever and forever as this system, that may not be ran as responsible as it should, but what is the alternative.
I personally came from zero.... literally on the streets, homeless zero. By myself, I have obtained a substantial six figure salary over the years of just going out and making myself, couldn't have done anything like that without this "system".

Can we get back on topic and just admire what the video is regarding, and the original intention of this forum.

Agree, I would never open an aquarium shop.
Takes everything away from the hobby.

I would be a little scared of losing the love for the hobby, but the possibility of not having a job I hate one day is tempting. Taking care of 10 000 fish doesn't really interest me, but a coral farm someday maybe.

I'm with you...corals seem to be the easier route to go down... although I bet anyone that actually owns a coral farm will dispute this :p

As one who has done it for nearly 30 years, I disagree.

Oh, can't wait to be educated!

HAHAHAHAHAAAAA
Did you even watch the video? Or did you just want to interject some unrelated rant? Dude started out of his basement, yea sure great to be rich...

On topic, very cool video. I'd love to have my clowns breed and try my hand at raising the fry. I can definitely see both sides of the coin, quick way to kill a hobby is to turn it into a job that doesn't pan out like you hoped. But also a great way to work in a job you love. Can't see myself running a storefront and maintenance company, but I barely can keep maintaining my own tank lol. Now trying a coral/fish aquaculture would be neat.

If that’s what you insist on, then I guess that’s how it will work out for you.

I grew up poor and from a broken home with no support coming in from my father. My mother...well, she had a difficult time not making self-destructive decisions.

Seeing that, I made choices based on making sure I didn’t have to continue to live that life. I didn’t have 2 nickels to tape together, but I went out and put myself through school...twice. Both times, I chose the path of living the dream without going broke (zoology and secondary education) rather than working to set myself up really well financially. It was a conscious decision.

I’ve been working ‘professionally’ with reef aquariums for almost 30 years. I’ve owned my own business for about 16 years. I started it with the last paycheck I got from my old job. I didn’t need money up front, because I had a plan.

Happy to report that I have been in the black since 11am my first day in business. Have I gotten rich from it? Not financially rich. But I’ve done well, have worked for a bunch of interesting people, have worked with some of the top names in reefing.

You don’t need $$$ to get going. You need a plan.
