I used one for many, many years, and loved it. That thing could skim!! But power consumption was high (not good here in socal), and cleaning the becketts was a bit annoying/frequent, mostly due to stomatella shells.
As time has gone on, needle wheel type pumps are much better in both design and quality than they were back when I bought my beckett, use much less power, and require slightly less frequent cleaning, so I switched.
Dimensions may also be a factor. With becketts you generally go taller, while needle wheels you go wider.
I am using one one my new build. So far it is doing great at skimming with very little in the tank.
Good to know, what brand and model was it?
"IF" you needed to would you give one of the newer models a try?
I would add, at least with mine, you need a overflow tube into a bucket.
