I use an aqua UV in my reef. It seems like a lot of the setups I admire and view don't contain UV sterilizers. I obviously did it for my fish, mostly tang hoping it will minimize chances for ich and other problems

Thinking of getting one for our nano to atleast stop Aiptasia (?)

I only use mine once maybe twice a month but I'm on a nano set up. I can tell it stresses my fish out because of the water quality change but I have never had a problem with ich. I also only leave it on for the most 12 hr. Saves the bulb and it's not doing much after that amount of time.

UV is really for fish systems and kills off beneficial stuff (as well as bad) in the water column.

UV will do little or nothing for aiptasia. They are going to persist and spread regardless w/o other measures like manual removeal, aiptasia-x or critters that eat them. At most UV may get aiptasia gametes in the water column they release when reproducing. A filter sock is likely as effective at that or a skimmer with ozone.

Not me but I won't rule out ever using it!

I have been reefing since 03 and with my current setup I ran a UV on the tank the first year. I took it offline recently and have not noticed any difference. I think it was great for keeping the tank clear and keeping the fish healthy as they are always susceptible to getting sick when you first start up a tank. My only thought is if you get one, make sure you get one large enough and powerful enough to really zap the dna. You also need to match the flow on it with what you are trying to accomplish.

Look at the post I started. We had a really good info session about UV and reefs!

Run reefs with and without UV and after several years running with and without I now run without UV. I do however run an Oxydator which I have run in all my tanks for around 25 years that good food and regular feeds I believe have been instrumental in keeping my tanks disease free. I have not had a case of White spot for instance in all that time and I have never quarantined a fish or coral although I do dip corals.

I currently run UV in my RS Max-500 (Turbo-Twist). I also run a smaller Turbo Twist on my office nano tank. Honestly I think one of the Pros to having a UV is that it does seem to polish the water nicely, add that to the shimmer of LEDs, gives you beautiful water to view thru. In the past I had some issues with "milky" algae blooms and a LFS suggested a UV to help clear it up. It cleared up and I have been using UV since then on different size tanks. Not being all that knowledgable about pathogens as others, I don't think its of much help to combat. Perhaps running one 24/7 might help more. I recently had an Ich outbreak and I hadn't got my UV hooked up yet prior to the outbreak, so not sure that it would have helped. After much reading on Reef2Reef and other blogs I learned that chemicals, UV etc...will not kill ich in your DT. If you have ich in your tank, you have to quarantine ALL fish for at least 30 days using a Cupramine soak and leave your tank fallow (no-fish) for up to 77 days to give you a 99.99% chance that you are rid of ich. One thing to consider as many will have opinions about Yes or No on a UV is that ALL Municipal Water Management facilities use UV in their final stages to combat any bad bacteria strains nasty microbe critters, prior to it running thru the city lines and out our tap. I'd say if it's safe to drink the water after UV treatment, it's prob safe for our fish...Unless you live in Flint Michigan....never drink the water there LOL Good luck in your decision!

I run UV 6hours daily and found that green algae disappear & fishes also look healthy slime is also in control...

I run this Lifegard 40w, but not 24/7. If water looks off color, I'll run it for 12 hrs.
