My fiance. I had my freshwater tanks. One day I looked at while at the fish store and said I think I want a saltwater tank. Her reply was I amazed you do not already have one took you long enough......
A friend of mine back in '96 had a saltwater aquarium. After about a month or two of watching water changes and ride-along visits to the LFS, i started my own.
I think it was more like the seahorse starved to death because it wouldn't eat what ever it was the LFS told me it would eat. And the Nudibranch got sucked up and killed the tank shortly afterwards.
I had fresh water while living in CA. and right after I moved there, I went into a LFS there to see what they had.
It was more SW then FW and it got me hooked. On top of that my boss had a 60g in his office that was in need of alot of help. So I convinced him to let me "re-make it".
And as they say............. "the rest is History".
none of the above just like fishing then wanted to learn more about fish . then bought a fresh water tank got some piranha and that was in 1986 ever since then I have just been fascinated by the hobby progression has led me to where i am now with corals and fish..and broke. seems all my spare time and money go in the tank .

my fiance when we first got together, i mentioned i wanted an aquarium and she said lets do saltwater!! so we strarted doign some research found a used tank taht i payed way to much for and could have gotten a bigger one for the same price and here we are now upgrading to a bigger tank and all better equipment lol.
I went to central Michigan university for a couple years and my roommate who also lives down the street from me in my home town had a saltwater aquarium and i always kinda had an interest in it. Than a couple years down the road me and some other roommates set up a FW tank.. it was ok.. i didn't really like FW tanks than i finally got into saltwater when i bought a 35g hex at a garage sale.
I've had my own tank since I was 5 (freshwater). My father and grandfather were champion guppy breeders so they got me into the fish hobby at a young age. I started a saltwater tank when I was 13 cause my father said they were too difficult to do. I proved him wrong and I've been hooked ever sence so my dad was in a way the one that got me into it.
I'm surprised by the many family influences. I got started from my brother, who always had tanks. I finally decided to do my own when I got my own apartment in 2004 and I've been doing it ever since.
My buddies 150gal built into the wall is what got me jonesin, but my girlfriend actually got me into it by buying me my first setup for a Christmas gift.
