Whos got a AI Nero 5 Powerhead?

I used to be a big Nero 5 fan and always recommended that pump until it sucked my extremely healthy Canary Blenny into the rear opening and killed it. When I left my condo in the afternoon the blenny was perfectly healthy and swimming actively allover the tank, a few hours later I discovered it dead in the blades of the Nero 5.

I emailed Ai with pictures and stated that the issue was the openings on the rear of the Nero 5 pump which are too large, a hazard for smaller fish and that clearly caused the problem. I asked if they had any plans to offer a foam insert (their sister company Ecotech has it on their Vortech pumps) or a improved rear cover with smaller openings and Ai simply gave me brushoff. :mad:

It sucked up my clown fish. I emailed them and also told them they need a mesh cover. They also blew me off...

Got my nero 5 about a month ago. Have not hand any issues with fish, but was worried bc of all the posts I've seen about fish getting stuck. So I bought a 3d printed guard from a member on here. @TheKingInYellow , it's awesome and looks fantastic. Only complaint is the magnet just isnt strong enough. Mine hasn't fallen off it but you can tell.it barely holds through my glass and it's not even half inch. That's my only complaint about it. other than that I love it love the programming I was able to set up through my phone and the app.

I recently picked up a Nero 5 for my Nano tank, I was debating between the Nero 5 and Vortech MP10 both of which were available at my LFS. After talking to the sales guy he had recommended it highly and he's been using it on his tank for a couple months.
My first impression, sleek design, easy to setup, compact, strong, I like having on APP to control both my AI light and PH.
What I don't like, my clean up crew keep finding their way into the back of the PH, there should be a finer mesh or covering. Not a fan of a wire going into the tank either, its hard to hide the wire on a rimless tank. As far as direction, you can barely angle it, or it falls off the magnet. When on straight it sticks, and when the pump is on its strong enough even on 1% to hold itself to the glass.
For my tank now, its over kill even on 1% strength. When I upgrade to a larger tank I'll reassess and be able to use this to its full potential.
I still regret not buying the MP10, but I'll ride this Nero out for a couple more months..

If you are unhappy with the limited angling of your Nero and the sticking power of it's magnet I would recommend that you don't waste your money on a MP10 as you only get 1 angle with that yes straight forward and as for magnet mine will not stay stuck on 8mm glass over 50% power it vibrated itself off all the time. I've re. Oved a few healthy fish that have been stuck to the side of the wavemaker and as for the sponge covers well lets say awful looks and rip easily. The shaft on my new wet side rusted yes new wet side as a CUC when in the front and broke the impeller blade off. My MP10 requires relocating in the bin I would nexer buy another

Thanks for your input..I've never had an MPXX..food for thought...this Nero 5 was an upgrade from my old korrilas..but I've also been outa the hobby for 8 years...

BRS video...says 90 on the phase is even better

The problem is this video got one thing wrong @randyBRS the anti sync mode only works in pulse. If you try it in random they are noth separate and random. Which is a terrible feature bc you could wind up with them both at the top % at the same time and really create a whirlwind in your tank.. I contacted AI and they said there is nothing wrong with the feature and it's not suposed to anti sync in random so you dont get the random intersecting points like was mentioned on the video. Someone mentioned this in another thread and AI at that time said they were working on a fix. Think this was back in june. As of 2 weeks ago when I got my second nero (to use especially with this feature) now AI says theres no fix bc it's not a problem. And its "truly randome to have both pumps separately random" it's actually very frustrating, bc I had 2 mp40s and o used them in reef Crest as parent slave and it worked amazing. Now I really like the nero pumps theory slim profile and their wide flow pattern.. just wish they would fix thos random anti sync problem.

I think MelevsReef makes them out of acrylic.

Seen some others, just can't find them at the moment.

I have 2 from melev, they were designed by @TheKingInYellow and are 3d printed. They work great but need to get cleaned often as the holes get clogged a little and do slow down the flow slightly. But they pop off easy and a quick rinse and scrub with a toothbrush and your back in business.

I also have one purchased from Melev thanks to the work done by TheKingInYellow. I also periodically clean it with a toothbrush and occasional have to press it back against the glass when my Tunze scrapper moves it but it has done an excellent job.

Hey all, Trying to decide on flow for my new 72 gallon bow build. I would really like one powerhead on the right hand side of the tank only. Have been looking at Gyres as that is normally what i would use, but been reading about the Nero 5. Would a single do me or would i need multiple?

I used to be a huge fan of the Nero 5 but due to the issues with fish being sucked into the rear and their total lack of concern I would not recommend this wavemaker.

I have them and love em , you have to research stuff before you buy it though , and anybody with tiny lil fish in a nano should be using the aquamai KPS like I run in my nano , not a 3000GPH Lol , it is a suberb pump and as long as you dont have small nano sized fish , the wave action is not comparable to any pumps I have , and I literally tried every pump in the last 20 years I am able to run a 8 second rolling wave like a real lagoon with tides , the corals love it the interface is great and silent FTW ! If you put a PH in your tank that can do 3000gph and the intake holes are bigger than fish you own , the problem is in the end user not the company who made it. Would you buy a suit thats 3 sizes to big and still try and wear it to work ........ ? common sense people

2 questions. is one enough for a 72 bow to cover it all with no dead spots, 2 i will have some smaller fish, clowns, chromis, etc in this build... should i look elsewhere? tanks 4 foot
