Anybody have experience with using mangroves? I'm not looking to utilize for mass nutrient export, mainly looks.

Also can you post pics?

I have not used them personally, but i have seen them in my LFS as well as several local member's tanks. I have heard they are very good at reducing nitrates. I wish I had references from r2r build thread, most of the tanks I have seen FTS of are in nano-reef :-/ . You have to be cautious about calcium intake, and dose according if need be. But given several notable members are using it, I am pretty sure they work well

Thanks. I havent started dosing in this tank yet so im not sure i would notice the extra calcium consumption in regards to the mangroves per se. Ive been leaning towards them for looks. I have chaeto for primary nutrient reduction but was concerned about the roots in the rock, and how high the lighting would have to be above

What was your concern about the roots? I think the giant roots in the rock are the coolest part! It’s true you can't move that rock once they’ve grown in. I have 1 mangrove with yellow leaves that I broke a root on. Still kicking myself for that. I hope it grows out of it. I use more radions than I need so that I can take the lights high and avoid the shading. They do burn but they can take a crazy amount of light before they do. Thing is, they grown so darn slow for me under tank spectrum lights. Been 2 years and I’m approx 12” above the water with the lights. I’ve never noticed any calcium consumption that seemed out of line.

My concern with the roots was permanent adherence to the rock structure. If a situation called for me to remove the rock, and i found the roots had bundled the rocks together, could i trim the roots with little ill effects? Or do i now have 1 giant rock ill need help pulling out?

I appreciate all the responses.

I think you can trim them some, just not the roots of seedlings. I broke one of mine when it was still small and just had a few roots, and it's still yellow and hopefully recovering.
Someone mentioned this pdf in another thread, and it comments on trimming of the roots.

I grow, use and sell them! Adds such a cool and unique look to a tank! I love glancing at all these threads with people that use them in there displays
