I recently started my first saltwater tank, installed the live rock, cycled the tank, etc. After about 3 weeks I just began adding fish. the first weekend I added two cheap damsels, and yesterday a pair of clowns. The morning after introducing the damsels, one of them was up and at'em no problem while the other swam vertically in the corner for a few hours before coming to his senses. He still does the same thing every morning, but not for an extended period of time. After introducing the clowns yesterday I ran into the same problem this morning; one of them was dazed and swimming rather aimlessly for at least as long as I was still in the house before leaving for work.

I'm curious if it's simply shock from being introduced to a new system or if it will be a persistent problem.

To me it just sounds like they are sleeping, that's kind of what they do, especially in a new system where they haven't figured out sleeping spots or territories. I don't know enough to give you a definitive answer, im sure someone with more experience will chime in but that's my 2 cents.

My guess is they are sleeping but I've never experienced this with any of the fish I'ver ever kept. If they are snapping out of it and eating, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it get's worse, then I'd be concerned.

The clown didn't do it today, and the damsel seems to do it for a shorter period of time each morning so I'm not going to worry too much about it. By the time I get home from work they all seem to be fine. My freshwater fish have never taken more than 5 minutes to wake up nevermind a couple of hours so I was a little bit nervous. Chalk it up to first marine system paranoia.

Thanks for the input
