Why blame it on your skimmer.

My skimmer has been the one biggest pain since I started my tank. I am currently on my longest period of not having to adjust it, about 2 weeks.when its good its real good, but when its bad its real bad. Kinda got a love hate relationship going on with that beast!

I think many of the skimmer issues go back to improper break-in and fine tuning, due to impatience. I was guilty myself with my first skimmer. Once I figured out how to dial the skimmer in, the stability and consistency was dramatically different.

I would never run a skimmer without attaching a tube to the cup and allowing it to run into a bucket. I have a 5 gallon bucket under my DIY HOB skimmer. I even have a shut off switch in the bucket in the case of it filling, as it did once when 25 urchingsspawned at the same time.

If your skimmer causes a flood it's your fault. All skimmers can and will occasionally overflow. We have to account for that. Some are definitely more efficient and easier to tune.

I don't use the drain on my collection cup if it over produces when I'm not around I want it to go back in the sump to prevent emptying my top of reservoir. If your tank can't handle a day of no skimmate production you have more problems than the skimmer.
