Just started zeobak dosing 2 weeks ago, I have been keeping good records and Picts for growth progression BTW aquarium Cam is great for watching progress. We will see if I notice any extra growth and extra color. My ASD rainbow Mille is stalled out but I noticed little shoots popping out all around so maybe it’s waking up.

Looking good when coral is healthy they look wet not dry. The tissue is thick and if u take them out they will excrete a slime coat. A good test for anyone want to know how if the corals is healthy or not just take it out of water for a few second then put back in.

Related question then: Assuming the same bacteria colonies exist, are all surface areas the same? More specifically, is super-porous ceramic surface just as healthy for bacteria colonies as porous reef rock?
Yes. Even sand is a good place for bacteria to grow

Relieved to hear you agree. Over on the aquascaping thread, like you said, people are moving to minimal scapes and I have been suggesting blocks for the sumps to compensate. I keep tons of both rock and mp blocks. (And no, I don't have troublesome aluminum readings on ICP.)

U mean phosphate right? Sps need phosphate to grow but they dont uptake phosphate as good as nitrate. In the other hand bacteria eat phosphate better than nitrate. So to complete the cycle bacteria consume phosphate, coral eat bacteria therefore eat phosphate.

Not phosphate, ammonia. So, fish poop breaking down

While some reefers swear by adding bacteria and others not so much, there are ways that reefers are adding bacteria that have nothing to do with a little blue bottle. Some successful reefers are feeding a lot and possibly adding live food which would have bacteria. Even frozen sea creatures would surely add bacteria to the reef (although this amount would decrease over time in the freezer). On the opposite side you have reefers that feed little to no live or frozen food and rely on heavily processed dry food that has no bacterial content.
Cheers! Mark

Fish poop fish poop fish poop fish poop fish poop!

wait, fish poop! Fish farts?

fish poop needs to be bottled and sold, it’s quite magical, @EMeyer! anthony posed the question, and the most obvious answer (to me) is fish poop (maybe their skin too?), frag plugs, our hands? As the means of introducing “some“ free bacteria in an otherwise sterile tank (new dead and dried rock, new synthetic SW). Anyway, I think I may have typed fish poop more than you did, fish poop, so at least we fish poop know we can get free fish poop bacteria somewhere. Fish poop.
All this talk of poop yet no talk of pee? I guess I shall start. Here is a quick article:

I “love” how nobody really knows what is going on in our tanks, but everybody believes firmly in their theory:))) MerryXmas!:)

Yes if reefing is easy as AMC then all these company like Aquaforest, KZ , red sea , Triton , Fauna marin etc will not exist. We all thrive for fast growth and nice color

I think a lot of us also try to fix what isn't broken and believe that we are missing that one little tweak with some magic elixir that will make our reef super charged.
I would be curious to know how many successful SPS reefs have an Anemone (or more) I do notice that in my reefs with Anemones the SPS do not look as happy as the SPS in my tanks that do not have an Anemone.
Cheers! Mark

Bacteria do multiply however they get eaten by your coral. Most tank do well in the beginning because the bacteria population can handle the consumption but as more Coral growth they consume more bacteria therefore without adding them the population will decrease.
May I ask if I should stop using GFO then so that I can leave that for bacteria?
