Why cant u keep sps?

I wanted to order the zeo products but somehow managed to forget about it. And then I’ve ordered mb7. Now I don’t know what to do:/

What would be the result of overdoing it? I generally ask because I have started using MB7 this week. I am a firm believer of this bacteria thread in SPS tanks. I used Vibrant a couple months ago and after 3 weeks it caused a lot of Cyano and Dino's. I never had this problem in over the 2 year life of my current tank. I stopped Vibrant after 3 weeks but something still seems off and I am still battling Dino's. While I cannot confirm this and it is only my theory, I do believe that the bacteria in Vibrant not only went after my algae but it also went after my existing bacteria. Once the algae and bacteria were gone my nutrients plummeted and Dino's kicked in. It is almost like my tank had a reverse cycle if that makes sense and removed all sustainable bacteria and sterilized my tank. Again it is just a theory and I am dosing MB7 and going to start carbon dosing on Friday to try and help it along.

It's obviously up to you, but carbon dosing after a dino battle is probably a bad idea. Maybe I'm misinterpreting your post.

Vibrant, IIRC, is similar to stuff like MB7: it's a bac source with carbon source added into the suspension (I could be wrong about the vibrant). When I was dosing MB7 and Eco balance weekly, I had cyano. I stopped using MB7 and eco balance for a couple months now and guess what? No more cyano.

Vibrant, IIRC, is similar to stuff like MB7: it's a bac source with carbon source added into the suspension (I could be wrong about the vibrant). When I was dosing MB7 and Eco balance weekly, I had cyano. I stopped using MB7 and eco balance for a couple months now and guess what? No more cyano.

I do not see a carbon source listed on the MB7 ingredients which I guess this is why they say to dose Reef Fuel or other carbon sources to assist MB7. Vibrant does list Vinegar in the ingredients(at least my bottle did). Vibrant's claim to fame is that the bacteria culture used specifically targets and eats algae. Whereas it appears MB7 bacteria targets waste, food, etc. I am wondering if the bacteria used in Vibrant(which is a PROPRIETARY blend) does more than just target algae. Again, just a theory.

It could be a good chance. I can tell you this that if it does then I don't know if I can go through another 4 months of this again. I really wish they would let us in on what we are truly putting into our tanks.

TBH, no one knows for sure. The whole topic is all anecdotal

I can't speak to whether the carbon source itself causally (not casually) triggers dinos. Rather, the reduction of nutrients (and more specifically a low nutrient environment plus dry rock or even just dry rock) have been linked to dinos. Granted, it is anecdotal but consider (i) I and many others had never encountered dinos until the era of ULNS and dry rock or even just dry rock and (ii) if you encounter dinos, in all probability, you won't be one of the folks who screams "it's all just anecdotal." I'm sharing my experience because dinos catastrophically sucked on so many levels, including the fact that I lost thousands of dollars (maybe ~$10k but I haven't calculated the actual sum) by way of SPS losses not to mention all the other garbage I purchased in order to try and eradicate the dinos. (And the cost was the least devastating part of dinos.) Go through that once and if someone tells you (anectodally) a particular brand of flake food caused their dinos and I assure you that you'll likely think twice about buying that flake food, no matter how implausible or remote or anecdotal.

Edit: I love when people who disagree with a particular position in this hobby raise the fact that the issues of causation are speculative or otherwise based on anectodes. It's funny to me because we, in large part, have no idea what's really going on in our tanks most of the time.

I had dinos in my tank twice. Both times nitrates were high. I might be the only one on the planet with this, but if you’ve been reefing for long enough (5+ years), it is quite funny how the turntables... ) 5 years ago everyone would’ve put their house on the “fact” that high nutrients are the issues. Now it’s the opposite hype. But at the end of the day, I’ve seen dinos and algae in my life with both high, medium, and low PO4/NO3 levels. So when someone is saying to “just raise/lower this and that”, I know that he/she has no idea.

Or to put it other way: it blows my mind how false conclusions based on mistakenly correlating events are driving this hobby. Not to mention, that for example in the case of dinos, the current “method” being uv & medium nitrates & phosphates. But is there actually anyone who can tell me 100% if the cure was actually the nitrates, the phosphates, the uv, the now introduced different husbandry, possible change in lighting & magic potions, feeding different products, feeding differently and the list goes on and on - is what “cured” the issue? I think not. Best answer would be “probably a combination”. Probably. Anecdotal.

But I’m not here to argue. I just had enough of implementing methods (for $1000’s) that others claimed to be successful, failing to deliver results to my tank. This kind of points me to think, that a dino cure of any kind is 90% pure luck and 10% actual method, yet people view it if it were 100% method.

Are you sure they are packed with a carbon source.? I dont think they are.

I'm not sure, no. Supposedly they're "dormant" but suppose some aren't; it needs some form of energy, I'd assume?

Definitely a carbon source in vibrant.
