This hammer coral did great for the past 3.5 months now it suddenly stopped fully opening, my parameters really didn’t change over the months. I started dosing ALK to resupply what my corals been consuming. Any ideas. I also have hammer coral and frogspawn around this guy and there doing Awsome!

How long has the tank been set up
What were the parameters and what did you change it too?
You mentioned you started dosing ALK, how big of a change did you make Pre/Post Alk.
What is your Nitrate, Phosphate, Salinity

Some corals are more sensitive to ALK swings so if there was a huge jump, they are prob just ticked off and will recover

Wall hammers can be difficult at times.

What method did you use to dose the alkalinity? How much dkh have you adjusted at any given time? From what to what?

Thank you for the replies! Here are my parameters. My nitrates are at 15. I been dosing ALK pretty heavily honestly. But my numbers haven’t really changed much. I brought my salinity from 1.031 down to 1.027. I did that pretty quick as well. I’ve been dosing ALK through my Neptune DOS.

Also it keeps expelling brown stuff from its mouth I don’t think it’s poop at this point because it’s been doing it alot

When you mentioned you dosed alk heavily, can you elaborate on this? Also you dropped salinity, was that over time or all in 1 go? All in one go is a massive change....

Got pictures of that? It could be brown jelly disease

I'm not an expert and have been out of the hobby for 5 years untill recently. If my memory serves me correct the brown stuff is it dying and there isint much you can do to save it at this point, sorry to say. Cut off any good heads that are left and hope for the best at this point. 1.031 is high, even at 1.027 it doesnt leave much room for error for evaporation if not using a top off. Any new inverts or fish that are picking at it if all other corals are doing fine though, just shooting out some thoughts...either way good luck as I know it can be frustrating at times

I dropped the salinity over a couple days, I sure hope it’s not brown jelly but thank you for help!

I’ve had 2 problems with my hammers over the years and one had to do with salinity and the other with Chemipure. They do not like salinity spikes and will let you know it right away. As far as chemipure goes, I think it works too well in stripping phosphates and they don’t like that either.

So because I brought salinity down that could cause him to be mad only temporarily?
