Why do bta’s lose the bubble tips?

My 2 cents would be flow. I had one that split in two. Both are getting the same lighting but one has more direct flow than the other. The one that has the most flow has bubbles but the other has long tentacles. the one with bubbles moved around the corner out of the flow a week or so ago. it now has long tentacles apart from the bottom that is still getting direct flow.

The only other thing id say it could be is neck length. My long tentacle one has its foot deep in the rock and thus its neck is long. My other BTA had a short neck until it moved the other week and now its neck is much, much longer.

It's on my list. But I dont think the wife is convinced. I'm tempted to sell the nem on and go lps and softies. Mainly softies as this is only a tank in my bedroom and not my main tank, I need to keep the lid as the wife sprays deodorant in the room and if I change the light I can keep the lid. Yes i could fabricate one but I still dont think I could talk her round. I do have 2 other tanks.

I have no idea because I am new to this. We started with one. Now there are usually 14 that I can count. They split constantly. It seems that some must die off but I have no idea where they go. But the Maroon clown is very happy. She is large and aggressive. We got her in 2002 when the tank was built.

Reviving this thread - my only question is how does a place like Live Aquaria get all of their BTA's to bubble? It strikes me there is something they (and others) are doing that make them bubble rather than it being just genetics. Go to liveaquaria.com and check out their Diver's Den for inverts. All of their BTA's are always as bubbly as can be. I got mine from there, and within hours it lost bubbles and never got them back. I do not target feed it so my best guess (which is baseless) is that it's food driven.

I find that mine bubble when they are stressed (such as moving them or changing water conditions), and lose their bubbles when not stressed.

Mine was bubbled from the person I bought it from, he had tanks with dozens of them. After reading on here I should feed them, I did, and it lost its bubbles and never got them back. It has since grown, split, grown, split again, grown, and split yet again without me ever feeding it. I've had it 3 years and 2 tank moves.

Interesting. I just keep coming back to the fact that LiveAaquaria (and others) are able to get theirs to bubble up nicely for all BTA's they sell. I'm doubtful that's due to stress, but I guess it could be.

Maybe lack of good light? They may bubble to increase surface area to absorb more light? No clue.

So before I had 2 RBTAs in which one had bubbles and the other didnt. Since the last pic that I posted in page 3 of this thread, each RBTA split and now i have 2 of each. As you can see in the pic below, the 2 right ones are from 1 split and the lefts ones was from another split. All in the same tank/area and lighting. Are there maybe different strains of anemones that bubbles and doesnt bubble???

Purchased my anemone from my LFS in April 2020, about the size of a hockey puck and sad looking, fast forward to now..it's about 12" across from tip to tip and beautiful colors and has almost always had spaghetti arms, lol it bubbles up when it eats

As many have mentioned, there's no definite answer. I've noticed with mine even with a change in flow they can have them and at other times not.
