Why do Bubble Tip's split so much?

I put a 6" bubble tip in my frag tank and it split within 2 weeks.
Seems very common now.
Back in the late 80's early 90's I had a few green bubble tips.
They grew huge as in bigger than dinner plates. The foot would attatch near the bottom and stretch up over a foot or more.
Anyone have one now that does that?
Would love to see some pics if you do.
And thoughts on why they split all the time now?
 
I did, but I stopped spot feeding them.
 
Maybe our water and lights have progressed so well that we create a near perfect habitat for them?
