Plankton show preferential swimming towards fluorescent cues compared to non-fluorescent targets in both the laboratory and the sea. Further, green fluorescence enhances predation success, suggesting a prey-luring effect of fluorescence in corals.

Why? So that people can kidnap them from their 352 quintillion gallon home, chop them up into 1 inch pieces, and then sell them for hundreds of dollars for people to put them in their 10 gallon aquarium to stare at and make their friends stare at and make their family stare at.
