I started my first tank 11 yrs ago. I was really into it, had all kinds of LPS and softies. My tank was doing great. My tank crashed, I lost all my LPS so I just stayed with the softies.

It's been about 6 yrs and I want to get my tank looking like it use to. I am trying to find purple tiped frogspawn, but they are so wierd looking. They are all nubby, or look like a hammer coral. They don't look like the frogspawn I had. Am I crazy, or have they changed?

Here is a pic of the one I had. They were mostly long "polyps" with a purple tip. Not with nubs everywhere.

My LFS had a nice little 1 head frag. It was so different looking I didn't believe him it was a frogspawn. (I didn't tell him that) I told him I had to test calcium first. I thought I was crazy so I went in my old tank pictures and they look different to me. I like the old kind better.

Because I love euphyllia I've researched the hell out of them. I think it's just that the current strain has proven stronger That said mine is mixed green and purple tips with purple tentacles

Got a picture? What I liked about mine was it would sway with the water flow and it was pretty. The ones I've seen lately don't seem to sway as much, just kinda bounce off each other. Not as pretty.

I don't run heavy blues because I like the more natural look

It sways like crazy.

My guess is it has to do with current reefing trends. Things like uln systems, high flow and ultra high par lighting create a much different environment and may cause the coral to respond differently. The current fragging trend may also be partly to blame as many tanks are often loaded down with cut pieces that are moved from tank to tank and never really get time to acclimate to the environment and be "happy". I also had better luck with polyp extension on my euphyllia under warmer conditions for whatever that's worth. The below pictures are of my euphyllia garden in my last tank, took almost a year before I obtained that look to the polyp extension

It is probably because there is not enough flow and proper lighting.

Mine expand a whole lot with the correct flow and I get crazy PE!

I read Frogspawn do best in "lagoon-like" settings so medium light, low flow. Yours looks GREAT. How would you describe your light/flow situation for it?

I may be wrong and someone correct me if i am. I thought corals extend there polops to get light needed to feed. So of the pe is long then thay could be contributed to low lights with lights improving and getting better penetration the pe is smaller on frags now then in the past

I am running MP's that are linked on blue mode (the other is in alternating slave mode).

Thats not even a picture where they are having crazy PE because they send out a few long sweepers regularly.

From everything that I know, PE=Healthy/eating and what you want when keeping SPS.

No PE=Can not feed/bad.

Wow, thanks for all the pictures, they all great!! Maybe I will get the little frogspawn (if it's still there). I have a toadstool to trade, LFS said he would give me $25, and the frogspawn was $25. :)

So I went to the LFS and the frogspawn was actually 49.99. It was on the same shelf as all the $25 ones so I thought it was 25. Oh well. so after the trade and I had a 5$ coupon, it cost me 19.99.

I love it. :) not a great picture though.

He's opened up more and looks happy. My other frogspawn had sweeper tenticles, does this one? Just curious how close other corals should be.

I was reading on the pulsing xenia and it says it can release toxins that hurt LPS, anyone heard of this?

I keep Xenia in my tank and my corals are all fine (LPS and sps alike). But I've never fragged it and I think that's when toxins are released

Oh good, I am not planning on fragging it. thanks
