Why do I have so much algae?

What a mean by failed is everything I put in it died in a few days to a few months. So I gave up and did more research and started over. I don't have a sump or overflow and I've ordered a skimmer.

It's good that your first fail didn't discourage you. This is can be a difficult and expensive hobby! It's very discouraging when you put fish in only to have them die. Just remember that patience is the key here. The longer you wait, the better you are. The sooner you try to put thigns in your tank, the quicker you'll kill everything. When you first start a tank, it's best to just sit back, relax and wait a couple months before you add any fish. They'll thank you for it. And do it slowly. I mean, don't just throw everything in there at once. Start out with just a few hermits and feed them some shrimp pellets or something. Wait a few weeks, and then add a fish or two. Something tough, like a Yellowtail Blue Damsel. Just a little bit at a time.

So basically, for now you only have basic equipment it sounds like? Just a stock light? What kind of a filter do you have? You'll definitely have to get a circulation pump to get the water circulating. Should get that water circulating asap. IMO.
