Why do my Hermit crabs/shrimps keep dying?

Maybe your just feeding the inhabitants with new crab ? Just a thought.
do you have shells/ spare shells for your crabs to move into as they grow,?
So many questions and answers I assume will be mainly your aquarium is quite new, you may think your providing food, crabs do love abit of algae which I assume your aquarium has none

My astraea snails are thriving. More algae than 2 can handle and there were 2 spare shells for it

I have so many different types of snails, hermit crabs, I have a corner filled with various sized shells, I think I have lost maybe 2 hermit crab since I started filling my aquriam with life in October/ November,... At a quick count I think 30 hermits ATM. I started my aquarium in February 2021 fishless cycle.
My crabs have been swapping out shells throughout as they have a selection to choose from, I always find molts and always looking to see if it's death or molt lol.
My Halloween hermit crab as you can see from pics is big (for my aquarium) this was my first invertebrate I introduced,
Again your aquarium is still new, as mine is, if your hermit crabs are dying then Thier is a problem in your aquarium? I can Only offer advice and for me and my success so far is new homes for the hermits

Why just certain crabs?

When I originally posted this thread my tank was only 2 months old. The tank is now 6 months old, and I have added several new batches(2-3 crabs each time) since then. The new hermits have all survived. Some of the recent batches I didn't even acclimate them and dropped directly into the tank.
From my limited experience hermit crabs don't do well in newer tanks, as others mentioned starvation could be the issue(perhaps they have different diet than other types of crabs).

Depends on the type of hermit crab you introduced and for what purpose you wanted them for like eating algae or for me... To see if life could survive in my aquarium.
