I’ve had my tank running for years with no diatoms, but I had to take it down and remodel it this year. The same rocks were used (I added some new ones though) and the sand was completely changed.

I’m seeing diatoms in the sand and I’m confused because I’ve read it comes from silicates from water...but I’m using the same water source that I’ve been using for years.

It’s probably coming from those new rocks you added

I believe the sand is your issue. Water can have dissolved silica but it also comes from sand, quartz, sandstone, etc

So the new sand probably sparked the bloom.

I think Diatoms become noticeable in new tanks because the organisms that feed on diatoms are not yet established in the tank, the diatoms get a head-start, so to speak, until the diatom eaters populate.

Thanks! I’m having the same thing with phosphates. It’s about .50 last time I checked. You think the sand leached it too?
