Why do people say clownfish "host?"

its just a common way to say it. most of us know its actually the nem hosting the clown but in most situations its easier to say "will my clown host this nem" or "why isn't my clown hosting" rather than "why isn't my clown accepting the nem" or "will my clown live in this nem" its annoying but its not something that's going to end anytime soon.

the clowns kinda force whatever coral they like to be their host - hammer, frogspawn, even my mohawk zoa colony

Still it is the anemone that will or will not host the Clowns. The Clowns have no say in it.
considering clowns will "host" a powerhead, duncans, elegance, frogspawn, hammers, even an overflow.... I think the clowns have a lot of say in it. the clown has to chose if it wants to be hosted. sure the anemone could eat the clown but if its a hosting anemone it doesn't tend to do that or care which clown is living in it. a clown hosting a nem is kind of a backwords way of saying it, but its the clowns choice more than the nems.

Mine spawned in a fake decoration and now has spawned on the overflow.

I do have a hammer that's suddenly staying withdrawn in my other tank and I suspect one of my clowns had upset it.....my frogs pawn is not exactly liking the attention from the clowns ether but my Duncan has avoided attention so far.

Thought about trying an LBA in there but I have tried twice in 10 years and failed both times.

I can't get mine to host anything
How long have you been "trying" or how long have you had them in your tank for? I had my clowns for quite a long time and wouldn't host anything, then one day just saw them having a ball in my elegance which I had in there from the beginning... It's like they just wake up some day and say hey, let's try this lol... Then I moved my elegance after some months to another spot in the tank which was a tiny tank thinking the clowns would just follow and carrying on hosting it, but nope, it's like they are blind lol... It took them 3 days to find the elegance again and then they were happy again lol.. Some guys "train" their clowns to host, but I reckon they will just do it when they want to. Now my clowns and ditched the elegance for my inferno bta... Who knows what they will go for next haha... Don't stress they will host something when they want to [emoji6]
Thought I would throw in a pic.. I just love this one.. They are the cutest things all snuggled up in a sleeping bag lol

ive heard of people putting a tablet against the side of the glass with a video of a clown playing in a nem on a loop for a few days and then the clowns in the tank would start checking out the nem. not sure how effective it really is but its worth a shot lol

This. It's funny how badly it bugs some people, but I think you hit the nail on the head as to why it's so often said this way...it's just the fastest way to say it even though it's technically backwards. Because of that, we can expect people to say it wrong for years to come. :D

I also agree that the clown is the one who decides what it chooses as a host...after all, you never hear of anyone complaining that they can't get their nem to host the clown--it's the clown that refuses to go to the nem.

It's the park in the drive way, drive on the parkway type of thing... Lol
I think it's mostly because it would sound weird saying "my veggie clip is hosting my clownfish" lol

Well I'm hosing my clowns in a bowl of water. They just don't seem to like the furniture (green and red anemones) that I have provided them. They seem to have come from a broken home. The only thing they host is my return line at the top of the tank. Sometime they take the slide down to the basement sump. If one goes the other will follow within a day or so. Pretty sure they are just kids at heart in a playground.

Need to think about it this way --- when you have a party at your house (( the anemone )), you are hosting your guests (( the clowns )). I am not sure why people want to say it wrong. I don't buy the reason that it is easier. It does bother me --- more so when people say it wrong even when they know it is incorrect.

The only things that clowns can host would be a parasite. :)

This is not true. Research how many Clowns have been severely stung by unwilling Anemones versus Hammer or power heads.
If an Anemone doesn't wish to be a host the Clown will suffer. No matter how persistent the Clown may be.
I think some people believe that a Clown actually has a choice. Why is my Clown hosting the Hammer and not the Anemone?! How can I get my Clown to host my Anemone?!
In all actuality it is the Anemone that will not host the Clown!!

What about the clowns claim to be the owner of the nem? When I go to a party, the host is often the owner of the house right?
