I'm wondering why certain corals, like chalices need such an established tank to survive. What exactly is it about the established tank that is required?

bacterial content...........food................stable parameters. I think alot of the time its just a food source NOT in the water column on a tank thats not established enough. I would say 3 months at least for a few SPS corals. Preferably 12 months in my opinion.

Usually people say a year for chalices, do you guys agree?

I think because the tank has developed a solid biological filtration to keep the tank stable, which leads to greater stability

Gotta take a lot of that with a grain of salt. I recently had a chalice die out, no clue why, and my system is well over a year old. Meanwhile, a chalice I got at the same time is still thriving. In the end its all ball park and recommendation which most are accurate, but nothing is exact. However, even stabile systems have issues, mostly from human error!
