Why do we need rim for a new tank?

It seems some player have rimmed tanks. Why do we need this?

What does it look like? Could you please share some photos with me?

What's the material of the rim?

Some tanks use plastic or acrylic rims to add additional support.....a lot of the larger glass tanks are built that way. The tank on the left has the rim, while the right does not.

I wonder the plastic or acrylic rims are hard or soft? Are they affect the installation of aquarium lights? (I mean fix the bracket.)
 
Rims drastically increase the safety factor of tanks. This is why rimless tanks need much thicker glass.

Brackets of lights: I suppose it depends on the brackets...with a little work, I would think any light could go on any tank.
