Why is the marine aquarium / saltwater tank hobby always under attack?

There seems to constantly be an effort to shut down collection sites around various parts of the world...some of them being the most sustainable and well managed

I appreciate the title does leaves me open to abuse... weirdly... my own family couldn't wait for me to upload this video?

Fish keeping in general I think is not very popular compared to many other hobbies out there. To prove it.. my girlfriend's grandmother asked me one day why I don't just put all my fish in one tank... And note I have both fresh and saltwater tanks now.. I don't think it's hated, I just think a large portion of people are not educated on the hobby so they might think it's wierd or something

All my friends that I talk to about keeping fish think it’s awesome and a lot of them want to see my tank. Only negative I get from people is “isn’t keeping fish a lot of matinance?”

I've never had someone say something negative about my (this) hobby. Id simply laugh and walk away if someone tried to engage me in a conversation of negativity about it.

When someone says something about one of my hobbies I am excellent at alienating them so they never share their opinion with me again. About anything.

Well I get mixed results, but the one thing I see a lot is people tend to place human emotions into animals too much.
So like one gf I know says oh, I like your clowns, but I would like to see them free, swimming across the ocean and playing, and I'm like ok, number one, my clowns would probably never go more than 2' from their nem in the wild, and two, you've seen too many disney movies!

Then of course is the gf factor of where my money and time or attention goes, those types of girls to me are just not reef safe.

Working in the habitat reatoration/ mitigation field I have heard I am a hypocrite for protecting endangered species land while collecting rare corals. Everyone who has said this did not realize at home propogation was a thing.
Great video overall!
One thing that might be missed is the use of poison to catch aquarium fish. I have seen videos that are pretty shocking but you are right that it is with out a doubt low volume.
I will forsure watch once it comes out to see what is said.

You may not be familiar with the ornamental fish catching industry in Hawaii?

Google snorkle bob and the Hawaiian reef fish industry.

That is just 1 aspect. But it is a great example.

The reefs are segregated into 'take' and 'no taking' areas.
Naturally, the no take' areas have improved reproduction levels over the years that this has been studied.
But the important part is the fact that the 'take' areas still have increased reproduction of the fish!

There is still net growth in the 'take' areas. It is not a net loss. Even though Fish are being removed for the aquarium trade the population is still increasing!
Net pun definitely *not* intended.
