Why does my dorso drain have these holes?

Ok so finally water testing tank and the dorso drain is NOISY!! Gurgling and sucking noises, played around with return pump pressure but nothing. Watched several videos on them and noticed none of the diy ones look like mine. Here is a pic of mine and you will see the holes I refer to around the top near the T. These holes seem to be where the siphon and noise is coming from, can anyone shed any light on this please?

The holes near the top (right at the T) are to prevent a full siphon, i.e. they let air in - hence the noise. If it started a full siphon, it would pull too much water down (and would not be a Durso).

When I ran a Durso, I put a valve on the line to help dial it in to minimize the noise. When you close the valve it will raise the water level, you just need to find the balance of a healthy amount of sump flow and tolerable noise.

The only other way I know of to cut the noise down, is to cut the flow into the drain, which could mean lowering the output of the return line. However, that would have to be so low, that you would only end up with a trickle of water down the pipe...

I believe those are height adjustable. Have you tried adjusting to minimize the noise?

The tube itself is height adjustable but the holes are fixed. I tried the tube at different heights and did not make a difference. Fortunately it all comes apart and is standard 1.25" fittings so I'll replace the top with a T, 90 and cap and see what happens

Mine also has the 3 holes like yours. I have not filled tank up with water yet but i'm wondering if i should reconfigure my T at the top of my durso as well?

Yes please get back to me on your results. we have identical durso drain pipes. I have dual overflows which for me could mean even louder sound coming from them.

Keep in mind, my plumbing drops into my basement and the gravity drain creates quite a pull. When I bought this tank it was setup with sump in stand and I don't recall it be that noisy. So my prob could be a combination of a few things that just need to dial in. However EVERY video and instruction I've seen on making a Dorso, NEVER has holes in it where these are so there's something to be said about changing the top piece imo.

I was just looking thru google images on durso drain pipes and i'd say it is about 50/50. Half the pictures our like ours and half have different setups with those holes not present. So i'm not sure whether i should just try it out or just change it out.

Your durso is a megaflow durso kit. Used standard in a lot of your common reef ready tanks (marineland, Aqueon, ect). The holes are supposed to be there. You should modify your flow to change the noise of the overflow. A durso that has the periodic and rhythmic toilet flush sound is being overwhelmed by the pump and occasionally going full siphon before the air breaks it. Slow the flow some and the air/water balance in the pipe will be more stable. That durso can be dead silent if the flow is set correctly. It's the same one I'm ising and it's totally silent.
