My uderstanding is this is mostly to feed filter feeders and pod populations.

Why do people feel the need to add this to their tanks thinking it is feeding coral? Or am I missing something?

All it did for me was give me a ton of algae. I don't know why people do it either.

None of my coral eat phytoplankton. They do eat zooplankton though. I won't add any phyto to my tank and never have. There's an LFS here that sells DT's Phytoplankton and calls it "coral crack". Last I looked it was $20-$30+ a bottle so I can see why they want to push the product. I think all it does is raises phosphates and grows algae and sponges.

lots of animals in your tank will benefit from phyto!
are you adding dead phyto or live phyto? there is a difference
dead or dying phyto could raise your po4.
I dont see live phyto causing a problem it is the "base" food for everything in your tank. you know the whole circle of life thing.
