Because this method doesn't work long term, anymore than it's analog and parent the dead coral skeleton with UG and crushed coral aquarium. You think this method is new. It is actually the oldest method in the hobby.
I started my tank with dead coral that I collected myself in the Caribbean and Hawaii and bleached it myself in the hotel room. My gravel was, and still is dolomite over an undergravel filter. That tank is still running but if I post something saying a reverse undergravel filter is the best thing since slice bread i would be laughed off this forum.
It doesn't even matter that it is fifty years old, it just doesn't sound right and we will all hear about it being a "nitrate factory" even though virtually no one used one the way I suggest.
In my book I wrote a chapter on exactly how I would start a new tank from scratch using dry rock and a reverse undergravel filter. I also recommend (which even surprises me) quarantining with copper for 10 days or two weeks.
I hate quarantine but I also hate new tanks with new water and dry rocks so that is the absolute time I would quarantine anything because as I keep saying, there is no way to keep a fish healthy in a new tank with new ASW and dry rocks.
But I only recommend that for a very new tank like that. If you use live rock I would not recommend that course of action.
I don't expect anyone to read my book just for this but I have been writing this stuff for years.
As to why people are more obese now as compared to the 70s thats easy. Cell phones and computers.
When I was growing up in the 50s and 60s we were constantly outside playing. There was nothing inside except black and white TV and only 6 stations. The TV would go off at night. I mean literally go off because there was nothing on except a little white dot. After the last show which I think was the "Tonight Show". the station would say good night and the screen would go black.
In the winter we hung out constantly at the frozen lake and we ice skated all day until it got dark.
In the summer we went fishing and we had to either walk or bicycle to a fishing place 10 miles away.
We went swimming, we played stick ball, hand ball, foot ball, any kind of ball.
Then when I got a little older I did side jobs almost every day to make money because you had to make your own money. There was no "Hey Mom let me have a quarter". I would have just gotten a snide look and maybe a smack across my face. So I shoveled snow, raked leaves, painted houses, pulled weeds, waxed cars, planted trees etc.
I always had money and I always had enough exercise. You walked down the street in the 60s and you saw girls playing jump rope all over the place. School yards were full of kids running around.
Today I see kids texting and most of them are overweight, out of shape and have zero street smarts.
