Why folks don’t like adding nutrients

Ab+ isn't mainly a source of organic carbon. Its primarily a source of nitrogen.
It contains carbohydrates that gets converted to glucose (sugar)
 
As I look at it, this hobby isn't about seeing a parameter at a certain level, doing something and instantly having the tank back at that desired parameter. Things go very badly when you take that approach. This is way too easy to do when dosing nutrients and is why most of us say "just feed more". Gradual is good.
 
Help me understand, why do folks don’t like adding nutrients to a enclosed system wend in most times sources of Carbon, Nitrogen and phosphorus can be the quickest ways to fix nutrient issues in a system, not to mention that can save a tone of €€€ in medias and avoid nuisances.

is it mainly because there’s a lack of literature on the understanding of enclosed systems nutrition or mainly just a personal choice because the subject is not well understood for most.

another question I have is why some folks are so proactive at using hidden nutrients in some products and then so against at using nutrients that are clearly explicit.


I don't think this is as big of an issue as it seems. People know you have to have "food" and its pretty common knowledge these days that you need some. Some people also don't directly dose nitrate and phosphate as it is intimidating to new people. I also don't advocate it as I recommend going with a more "tasty" option for cnidarians or something easier to do with a daily routine (i.e. feeding more)
 
How do I know if I need PO4/NO3 in my aquarium? Is there a sign to look for?

I was shocked to see 0/0 nitrate/phosphates after a month of heavy feeding and AB+ daily. However, my urchin was not too fluffy, the rocks were getting fluffy and polyp extension diminished so I did two large water changes. Its still 0/0 but looking pretty good. I have gone back to normal feeding and no more AB+ for now. I'll see in a month or so what difference that makes.


That is a bad idea. AB+ may be preventing the 0 nitrate and phosphate from killing the coral as it is providing the source of nitrogen (and maybe a little phosphate) to the corals.
 
Speaking of nitrates....

I dosed my tank up to 5ppm last night using ESV (calcium) nitrate, which is currently my go-to nitrate supplement.

Has anyone used the new NeoNitro 5X yet? I'm curious if it is really 5X as strong as the original.

If so, that would make it stronger than ESV, and therefore, probably cheaper than the ESV that I'm using now.

I couldn't find any official dosage instructions for the new 5X version, but if it's really 5X the original, then that would be stronger than ESV.

ESV seems to be twice as concentrated as NeoNitro, but if NeoNitro 5X is really 5 times more concentrated, then it's going to be more than twice as concentrated as ESV now.

ESV = 1ml raises 20G of water 1ppm.
NeoNitro = 1ml raises 1G of water 5ppm.

So to dose a 40G tank up to 5 ppm:
it would take 10ml of ESV, or 20ml of NeoNitro. (ESV is twice as strong)

if NeoNitro 5X is really 5 times as strong as regular NeoNitro, then it would only take 4ml of NeoNitro 5X. Making it 2.5 times stronger than ESV.

I buy the 1L/32oz size bottle of ESV nitrate for $15.
Looks like the NeoNitro 5X is around $30. so it might be a little cheaper than the ESV, if its 2.5 times as strong, but only twice the cost.... will need to confirm that.

Can't seem to find any vendors that have the 5X version in stock yet though. Looks like it can be ordered directly from brightwell/continuum though. I might have to see if my LFS can add a bottle to their next order for me.

There is also a NeoPhos 5X now too.

An excellent question I think and certainly all for it to achieve better stability, especially in my phosphates.

no idea what the reasons are other than convenience buying ready made solutions suits more people.
I’ve just started dosing sodium nitrate and working so far. It’s working well so far and much easier to keep phos low and nitrates slightly more elevated via dosing when running an algae reactor.
I’ve tried shop bought nitrates - too expensive and don’t last long.
 
For the most part I agree with you although our hobby has changed a lot in the past decade and there is many forms of organic carbon (carbon dosing) hidden in bacteria products, energy and fuel that lower nutrients without the folks using it being aware of it.
Would you not agree that we need to be aware of what we are adding to a system and the possible outcomes of those actions and once the mistake is made being able to rectify it with elements that we know the outcome ex. Calcium nitrate and sodium nitrate
Sure. I'm not opposed to dosing additives in some situations, but I don't generally believe they are the best course of action. You mentioned us needing to be aware of what we are adding to a system, and therein lies my reservations with much of the dosing mentality these days. With each additional layer of additives in a system, the overall complexity and variables compound and lend themselves to more problems than solutions.

I'm not at all trying to say some additives can't be very beneficial, but they shouldn't be the end-all solution that everyone arbitrarily throws at their system.

I used to carbon dose on a system I had about ten years ago that had issues keeping n03 down. It worked but was fickle in dialing in the right values. I stopped dosing no3 after I built a diy algae scrubber that works fantastic and was now fool-proof and arguably a better natural method.

My new system has had the opposite problem in that it's always had low no3. I had been dosing sodium nitrate and this worked great to increase my no3 levels easily. The problem I then discovered was that when you dose nitrates it bypasses the natural converting process that happens when you add food to the system to get no3 and this causes no3 dosing to increase alk levels (which was running high for me in my system already and was now another new variable I had to contend with = more complexity). So I stopped dosing no3 and just started feeding like crazy and was able to increase my no3 WITHOUT increasing my alk levels (no3 dosing will definitely increase your alk levels).

So those are just two examples of my own real-world experiences where sticking with a natural approach was far superior to dosing something.

Would the situation have to be evaluated before the advice, I believe that just feed more is not always the solution and in some situations actually detrimental to the system

ex. If a system is only depleted in Nitrates. I believe that in this situation just feeding more would possibly create more issues due to the following.

There is a reason why they don’t last as much, most ready made products are not intended to raise nitrates they are in a different form to be used by the tank organisms. (Nitrogen) for nitrates calcium and sodium nitrate will always be a more effective choice.

The problem is, you can't just go from zero nitrates to 5 or even 10ppm without having an negative impact in many cases. Typically this impact is due to biological competition swinging in the wrong direction, which means algae or worse pops up. I don't think there's a situation where overfeeding a reasonable amount to gradually raise nitrates is going to cause an ammonia spike simply because bacteria that's already established in the system is generally going to take care of that problem for us. This is why many of us with established tanks have lost fish, never found them again, yet have not seen any noticeable issue with other livestock. Maybe in a new tank that was poorly cycled, but generally not in an established tank unless you lost a big snowflake eel or something. Going from three frozen mysis cubes to six isn't going to be much of an issue ammonia-wise. I've tried both approaches here as I'm an sps guy and bottoming out nitrates and phosphates is terrifying. Talking from experience, I've had WAY more issues (mostly a strange turf algae on the back panel that a pain to get rid of) post manually dosing N03 or Po4, than just letting things ride and doubling my daily feeding amount for a week. It's just not worth messing up the N&P ratio and you really don't have that problem by increasing feedings. Nature is the way.

I know that they have nitrate/phosphate levels elevated to a moderate degree in their systems. I'll see if they have a system for controlling this. Its the first aquarium I have had that is not suffering from too high nitrates and I do nothing for it intentionally. I just want coral growth that pushes the top off and bows out the glass.

The system is either carbon dosing with a protein skimmer for export, macro algae, or water changes OR have so much coral that the system struggles to sustain a good nutrient level, which would be the case for a coral supplier and not so much an issue for most of us hobbyists. Well maybe aside from those with absolutely packed systems who started by being deathly afraid of having too much N&P and now have to do things to increase levels such as leaving filter socks in for way too long and skipping water changes. This is why I tell people to not go by "master" reef tank water parameters when starting out. It's a process to get to that point and is done out of necessity because the tank is so grown out that it would probably crash at NSW levels.

I agree there is a time and place for each additive encouraging discussion on the subject should bring more information to many users so that they can do informed decisions

this is some of the information that should be available to all of us, your experience dosing nitrates made you believe that nitrate dosing raises alkalinity.
In your situation you are correct because you used sodium nitrate if you were to use calcium nitrate you would observe a raise in calcium and if you were to use potassium nitrate you would observe a increase in potassium.

it’s not the nitrates that we’re raising the alkalinity was the form you chose to use, maybe a different form or a combination of different forms could of been beneficial in your situation. The skipping part is also not fully true as all tree forms of nitrates also contains organic nitrogen that will be beneficial for many organisms not fully bypassing the cycles in a way.

feeding more in this situation would probably also be my choice, I just thought the information above could be beneficial.

I agree with you, most systems that require dosing to avoid a bigger issue are often young, more mature systems that are not overstocked often find a balance.
By curiosity did you add nitrates in a bottle or potassium nitrate wend you encounter the turf algae?

I used seachem "bottled" products and had to dose daily for a week before nitrates stabilized at a detectable level.

Can I ask for the name? they have a few different ones available? most part of the range is made of nitrogen that can be used by several photosynthetic organisms in our systems before nitrates can be detectable similar situation to neonitro that many observe as most ingredients are in a organic form.

Flourish Nitrogen ("Derived from: potassium nitrate, urea") and Phosphorus ("Flourish Phosphorus™ is a safe solution (4,500 mg/L phosphate) of potassium phosphate." The algae obviously popped up in force after dosing Flourish Phosphorus for a few days as that was the lowest parameter. I was dosing nitrates to achieve 1ppm and phosphates for .06ppm as it was being completely consumed on a daily basis (as per hanna ultra low range P04) even before seeing nuisance algae.

I can see why the bad experience and I wouldn’t blame you, both products will have a high content in potassium that is one of the macro nutrients that can be a limiting factor for algae and phytoplankton including dinoflagellates, in addition potassium nitrate contains nitrates, nitrogen and potassium, Urea is fairly high in nitrogen, all together is the ideal product to raise algae and plants. I believe that this is part of the current misinformation around nutrients, inorganic nitrates and phosphates have little impact on algae and coral alone imo it’s the several different forms that they can be obtain that we should take in consideration wend dosing to achieve the desired outcome without any adverse consequences.
 
I think opinions also differ and change based on the maturity of the tank and the reefer. My tank is going on 2 years and In the 2 years I ran into problem after problem. Nutrients bottomed out, started dosing to hit measurable nitrate and phosphate which led to more issues. Eventually I just stopped adding anything but food to the tank.

Things are slowly turning around and I'm still measuring 0 0. The balance In a newer tank starting steril just swings too wildly to mess around with in my opinion.

My acros are starting to show decent growth out of months of nothing when trying to keep nutrients at a specific number. I think I may try it again once things mature more.

I also target feed which may be why my corals are doing great regardless of the nutrient test readings.

Again I have no doubt when the tank becomes rock solid stable that I will start slowly increasing nutrient availability in the water.
