So new to the hobby, tank about 6months old, trying to figure out this hobby and just seams like I'm doing things wrong. Why does my skimmate turn get. Yesterday it was brown, today green. This started last week, I cleaned skimmer and had some cheato in wheel. Thought I figured out but guess not. Can anyone help me on this

Is your chaeto kept away from the skimmer inlet by a barrier of some sort? Nothing sizable should be able to get into the skimmer.

So my cheato didnt survive, and there's some pieces that were floating around, and yes they are in 2 different compartments, with a bubble trap in between

Oh ok, if it died and fragmented or turned white, that means it released all kinds of nutrients back into the water.
Some of that would wind up in the skimmer.
I'd just keep skimming wet, it will turn brown again soon.
Also keep trying chaeto. Maybe use the Triton method or something similar to add trace elements.
Remove chaeto at the first sign that it's dying. Sometimes it happens.
Don't try to save it, just start over with fresh. Maybe increase flow and/or adjust light.

Thank you for the advise, I will read up on the method you suggested,
