why have nitrates?

There are some exceptions to higher N03 and P04. Many of us run what some would consider very high nutrients. My system consistently reads 40ppm N03 and .10ppm P04.

Corals can and do adapt to to elevated nutrients. Slowly over time.

Here's a eye opener on what is considered to be some of the most successful reef keepers in the United States.

I'm not a Marine Biologist but it my understanding a corals zooxanthellae required for growth is, in part, its consumption of Nitrates. However so small.....

Brains much larger than mine maybe can explain the Zooxanthellae/Nitrate relationship

Great article explaining it

This is also a very good video on the subject

Thank you for that article, very interesting read.

and WOW!!!!

Nitrates are a byproduct of a healthy nitrification cycle. So when people say "have nitrates" they don't mean, "have nitrates and ammonia and nitrites" but rather, "have zero ammonia, zero nitrites and have some nitrates." So having nitrates is just a byproduct of having a "stable" bacterial colony in the tank.

@Flippers4pups
I'm now inspired.... I have mostly zoas/palys and have had my NO3 at "0" for a few months now.

My zoas/palys are not growing, not expanding outward with new polyps.

I truly think they're starving.

So I ordered the GreenLeaf Potassium Nitrate (per the video) and I'm going to sloooooowly dose this to help feed my zoas/palys to see if they'll start to take off again.

I feel especially with zoas....they melt away bc they are starving in an ULNS with 0-no3 and .05-po4

My GOAL is to keep PO4 below .02 but get my NO3 up around 10ppm.

Overfeeding my fish just a hint to help feed corals seems to to raise BOTH no3 and PO4. With dosing potassium nitrate I'm hoping to satisfy my potassium needs at 400ppm and no3 at 5-10ppm.

C R A Z Y some on these Master Tanks have 30. 40, 50 ppm no3

Should be an interesting trial
