I have been battling issues with my tank for a while now and with nutrients. I have about 420 gallons of water volume split between 2 systems. I have a 300 gallon display, 80 gallon frag tank and 80 gallon sump all plumbed together. It seems like my tank and corals always do well when my glass gets that dusty brown film every few days.
My nitrates are at 0.20ppm and my phosphates are reading 0.00 which I believe is not true. I am running 6 cups of gfo in reactor and I have visible algae in the tanks. I also have green cyano in some areas of the tank. A quick background of the tank is I tried letting it get dirty which resulted in high nitrates and algae. Since then I have been able to get my nitrates down to 0.20ppm and phosphates reading 0.00 but like I said there is still algae in the tank. I believe the algae is consuming the phosphates so the test kit is not registering them.
My alk is 7.7-8.0, cal at 430 and mag at 1320. Is it possible that the algae is stripping all phosphate from the water before the corals can use it? If so, should I continue to run the gfo to rid all algae and then maybe cut back on it so it won't strip it from the corals. I would love to get a reading of 0.02 phosphate and my glass to get dirty every few days. My corals color up real good and grow when that dusting appears. Now I can go a week without having to clean the glass. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
