so can someone help me understand whats going on with my starfish. we rescued him from the LFS a few months ago because he lost a leg to another critter. we remember him having one black tip but not 5. is there something wrong with him? what can i google to read about it? i have tried a few word combos with no luck I Tried to search this topic with no luck. can someone educate me as to why 3 of my starfishs leg tips have turned black.

Pics didn't work.

And off the top of my head, no, not really. [emoji53]

Can you tell us a lot more about your tank.

whatever you might have been dosing recently.

Water changes, salinity, topping off.

what kind of starfish is it?

and what other fish you have in the tank?

Thanks

That looks less black than blue to me, which i would say is due to letting that section die to conserve energy. Have you witnessed it eating while you have had it?

Does he look like this?

Fromia indica
+1.

Linkia and fromia are very similar in fragility.
Linkia usually being the worst.
Except for the obvious blue linkia and Orange linkia they are sometimes cross labeled.

Our flame angels and rarely our yellow tang nip at the brittle starfish tips pretty regular.
Never really noticed any discolouration except they can occasionly appear slightly shorter and not reaching a perfectly pointed tip.

The fromia in the above picture is supposed to look that way.

Another version is beautiful bright yellow tips.

If your starfish started with tips the same color as the rest of the starfish that are now black then that would be different.

Did the pics come thru now

Pics came through this time.

Yeah, on that variety of starfish that's a bad sign period.

Might last another week or 2 based on previous experience.

Sorry about the bad news.

Give it a chance for a while. It may be the exception to the rule.

That's a Dalmation Linkia, IME they do better than most stars and it may just be a phase they grow through. I wouldn't worry about it until the arms start to disintegrate
