Why & When Do You Use Carbon?

From what ive seen on my current tank, i dont use any water clarifiers. when i took some par readings without the use of carbon lead to more then 30% reduction in par. Also i have zoas and corals that could potentiality leach toxins. So i currently use 80ml of carbon in a bag every 10 days stuffed in my bubble trap

There are compounds that tint the water and reduce the effectiveness of your lights, and lots of other bad things.

It's way better in a reactor, but if you don't have one or can't afford one a mesh bag will go a long way.

I was looking at Red Sea's new Reef-Spec Carbon. Only drawback is it comes in a mesh bag. I'd like to use my reactor.

You can still run the carbon mesh bag in your reactor, I've done this with great results. Depending on the amount of detritus floating around in your tank the mesh may clog a little quicker than normal

Watched a video by melevs reef now I run carbon in a reactor for three days at the beginning of ea ch month and then take it offline

I've been using Marineland activated due to lower cost for two weeks each month, but it's a 180 gal and reactor pump is slow

I run mine all the time, but I have a very unique system with major chemical warfare. If it gets old, I can tell by the corals reactions. I run it in a reactor and change as needed. usually every month.
