Low iron tends to be what I experience when I have chaeto die back. Especially if you have any kind of hair algae/bubble algae they can compete pretty well for iron in the tank. Regular water changes and making sure I rotate my algea a lot to keep it growing on all sides. I should probably get a small pump to get a circular flow.

I have a small powerhead in my refugium to ensure water flows around and through the chaeto instead of just over the top. My chaeto doesn't tumble as my two heaters are in the refugium and it gets caught on them. I turn chaeto ball over once-a-week as others on this site have said that they do. FWIW, my chaeto's shape is closer to a rectangle than a ball...
