Ok, After reading tons of posts about people using filter socks I just don't get it. What is the reasoning when you can buy filter cups and toss that nasty gunk in the garbage. Takes 2 seconds to do. Someone please explain?

Filter cups were a complete waste of money IME. Clogged up in hours. Red sea makes a nylon sock, that was a game changer for me.

Yeah, I was using the nylon socks before. I agree they are much better. I run three filter cups with poly fil and the fourth filter cup with carbon and I only replace the floss twice a week. I think the key is to use a very small amount in each cup.

Having multiple I'm sure helps. Having only one in a 75, could never get it dialed in. Even tried more holes in the cup.

My filter socks need changing maybe every 3 days, i toss them in a 5 g bucket, takes at most 30 seconds. When the bucket it over the top full I wash them with bleach, put in the 'clean' bucket and repeat. Takes very little time, even washing is only about 5 min every month or so and I have not had to buy a filter sock in years. From my perspective I can't see why anyone wouldnt use socks.

Really it shows how blanket statements are hard in this hobby because so many have drastically different experiences.
