Hob filter and hob skimmer, it sure isnpossible

It is possible!

I have a 42gl tank that i run with an eheim canister filter. You would need to clean it every couple of weeks and you would have to use a hob skimmer, but it is possible. I would highly recommend getting a canister rated higher than what you need if your going that route however. Mine has been up almost 2 years and everything is happy and thriving. As for having a clown only tank, I would recommend seeking some advice from our clown officianado's. They can give you great insight into the best type of clowns for your tank as well as preferred number for your size tank. Some clowns (i.e. Maroon Nugget clown) don't play nice with other clowns, while the Perc's and Occilaris do better in groups. Here is a shot of my canister tank :-)

Good Luck!!

A HOB skimmer can do the trick. I use a Reef Octopus BH2000. An intank skimmer can work as well like the Tunze Comline DOC DC Protein Skimmer 9012. You can run an AquaClear HOB filter as well with mechanical filtration and run carbon or use a canister filter of some sort. Both will need to be cleaned regularly to keep detriutus from building up in them. This sort of tank may require more frequent water changes to make up for compromises in filtration. Growing display Macro Algae in the tank with the nems could help with nutrient export and add variety to the display.
