Has anyone that live in cali or Florida or anywhere near those ever gone out and caught fish or inverts for their aquarium? I’m wanting to go but I’m wondering if it’s worth going just for that.

People do for sure. Just be sure what you're getting and that your water temperature matches

While you can, be weary of any laws that may prevent capture otherwise you would acclimate them as with any wild caught specimens

It’s illegal to collect fish without proper permits in most places
Here the Florida laws

I would assume inverts would follow similar laws but not 100%

according to this, some inverts are allowed others are not. This is Florida only

I've done that and still do. My CUC consists mostly of snails and Hermit crabs I've collected at the local beach. I've never had an issue.

But I am a 5 minute drive to the beach.

You're in Utah?

You would have to have a setup designed to transport everything home.

How far is the beach from your home?

I harvest blue legs from local waters in Florida. I've never had any issues. I don't sell them though. I Think harvesting for commercial selling is more regulated.

Excellent point; I was stopped by the local game warden to inspect what I was taking. No problem with what I'd collected.

But things like the 2 inch baby flounder, they made me put back.

It’s pretty far, the closest ocean is probably at least 11-12 hours away

Regarding Florida, you need to be aware of any local laws in addition to the State laws.
They are usually not forgiving if you get caught; the “I didn’t know” line won’t work.
