I had to leave with little warning and left my tank on. It’s new with water sand and rock only. 90 gals with 50 g sump. I don’t have top off installed yet. We can’t get back into the evacuation zone for at least another day. What will happen if I get too much evaporation with no top off? Will the motor just burn out? I’m new to the whole sump setup. I had a 29 bio cube before that burned up in the last fire. Help appreciated!!

motor could burn up, although it might not as long as there is still some water in the sump to cool the block and lubricate the ceramic shaft..

Yeah if you run return pumps dry they can burn up. If you’re lucky there will be enough water remaining to lubricate the pump, even if it’s unable to pump it to the display.

Many newer DC pumps have dry run protection, and will shut off automatically.

Depends in that amount of time I doubt it will loose enough to cause it to run dry. Some pumps have thermal protection. What brand return pump?
