You haven't lost one, because you have been lucky and they haven't jumped. I think nothing at all may be better than egg crate, as at least there is a chance they would land back in the tank. Get some mesh on there! [emoji3]while I agree that mesh is best, I have the crate on my tank with 3 dart fish and two wrasses including a sixline. I haven't lost anything. I know it can happen, but I think If you have compatible fish and enough rock work they are less likely to jump. the only time I worry is when my covers are off for a wc, but that's a problem with any kind of cover.
Your LFS is telling you fish are disposable. When they die, just go back for you to buy more. Would you think that was OK if we were taking about dogs? We all need to be responsible fish owners. If you have fish that can jump, you need to take every precaution so they can't.
