Not sure what kind of algae this is, but it doesn't scrape off, obviously won't blow off with a turkey baster, and my trochus snails walk all over it and seem to ignore it. I don't personally mind it of it's not a problem, gives the rocks a bit of color. Just don't want to ignore something that will become a bigger problem later.

Is this a new tank ( or is it a new piece of dead rock)?

It was dry rock, I put in a tank for about 4 months, and just upgraded to a bigger tank so I moved it over. It's been in water about 4 maybe 5 months total. Algae was on it in the old tank before moving.

Ya it just looks like the normal colors any rock will go through while becoming live. Nothing to worry about, it will go away with time

I assume I'll probably have diatoms etc all over again since it's a new tank, new sand, new sump, new everything.

Yep. Might be a mini cycle though.
I think I was good there as far as ammonia and such, 60 pounds of rock and a ton of seeded marine pure sphere's in the sump. 2 happy clowns in there, been about 3 weeks. Ammonia nitrites , nitrates about 5

Sorry, short uglies cycle. I added more bottled bacteria when I swapped tanks too.

It looks like the base of coraline starting to me , and yes alot of asterina stars and some snails / limpets

I was kind of thinking that, 1 or 2 of my snails came with it on their shells. I've never seen Coraline starting though so wasn't sure about it being green.. the rocks did have a few small red spots on the rocks before moving them. Now I've turned them all different directions and don't remember where the spots were.
