I’m thinking of making a sump/protein skimer lid out of ¼” plywood coated in epoxy, possibly with primer between the plywood and the epoxy. Condensation will form on this, and fall into the sump. I'm wondering if anything can leach through dried amine epoxy. If not, the lid will incorporate a few right angles which might develop cracks over time (or maybe not).

Is this a good choice of material? It's quite a bit cheaper than plexiglass.

IMHO, I wouldn't risk exposing my expensive reef tank to anything that would harm it.
Stick with what's been proven to work well.
I don't cover anything in my system since I try to encourage evaporation of the water.

I agree with this I wouldn't add anything and risk killing my fish and coal. You can find a cheap tank on craigslist or facebook marketplace. Usually decent tanks go for a dollar per gallon but I got a 55 gal for free on craigslist works great use it for a QT. I had a spare 40 gallon tank laying around so I went to a hardware store got some glass for like $20 and made a sump. only a few gallons of water evaporate over a few days depending on your tank size.
