Will clowns thrive without anemones?

I have a new Reefer 250 which will be 2 months old in 3 weeks. My LFS suggested I wait until then to add a pair of clowns which my wife and I are eager to get. Right not we have a Azure damsel and and a blue green chromis in the tank, do you think a pair of Gladiator clowns will have an issue with them? Also if I were to add an anemone should I add it to the tank after introducing the clowns of before?

Clowns should not be a problem. Rule of thumb is at least a 1 year mature tank for anemone I believe. I added my LTA after i had clowns. Still haven't hosted but cant force it. They do what they want.

If adding an anemone I would wait at least a SOLID 6 to 12 months, 12 months being preffered by far. Clowns will do just fine without it and adding one after they are comfy in my experience will give them something new to check out and inhabit.

They should be fine with your current inhabitants. I would wait a minimum of 6 months before adding an anemone.

So far my wife and I are torn between the Mocha Gladiator, the Picasso Clownfish and the Longfin Ocellaris from Ora Farms. We want to buy a pair in a few weeks and I was wondering if anyone has positive or negative experiences with any of them that they can share?

They will all have similar behavior characteristics. Out of those choices, I would go with the Picasso. I’m personally not a fan of the long fin clowns.

I have a well loved Picaso but her mate jumped out years ago. One thing you want to look at is what natural host anemone goes with which type of clown.
My Picasso lives nicely with my BTA which is one of the easier anemones.

I have multiple BTAs, rock anemones, hammer, duncans, etc. My Ocellaris initially preferred the Xenia and now hangs out in the Kenya Tree forest; it has never even looked at the BTAs, nor any of the LPS. As others have said, anemone is not required for a clown.

Which one did you guys end up going with? I've been looking for owner photos of the Longfin Ocellaris!

We purchased a pair of Gladiators from ORA through my LFS. The are absolutely beautiful and inseparable! :)

Had an established pair of b/w oscellaris. Added a BTA July 8th. The clowns finally found it just yesterday.
