Hey all, this is just a question I've been thinking about but not something that applies right now. I'm just wondering if Coralline algae will start to grow in a tank with dry rock and all new equipment (in other words, no source of old coralline). It definetly seems like no, but I'd like to hear if there is a way. Thanks

Mine took just a tad over a year I used all dry rock, seeded with a tiny crab that had coralline on shell. Takes time and needs good parameters.

I've seen very few tanks that don't get it eventually (assuming their parameters are in line)- it is present on most snails, hermits, frag plugs, live rock, used equipment, etc- even if you can't see it there, it's usually still there :)

Coraline algae in a bottle (google search this) has spores, do not get purple up as I think it is only fertilizer. Get the pink and purple helix mix. You'll have coraline in 4 to 6 weeks on rock and glass.

How much do you want? I might be able to spare a little bit.

Yeah, you always want coraline until it actually starts growing and you have to remove it from your glass. Then after you figure out that you accidently scratched your glass trying to remove it,, you either leave the panes covered or curse the fact that you used to be able to "wipe" away the film algae growing on your glass :)

You will need to put some seed rock in. There is also a company that claims to have it in a bottle, idk if it works or not. Personally, I'd pick up a small piece with good coraline, get a eazor blade and scrape it off, let it go in your tank.

Something will have it on it. CUC, frag, something. Mine took off after I added 2 rows of t5s to my radions. About to cover the back glass.

That was about 4 days ago. This is now. My rock urchin finally discovered it and did what I pay him to do.

I had one of them 15 yrs ago, called.it an orange eye urchin back then. Quills were about 5"long, touched little %$&@ while cleaning, never felt pain like that before. That night i had him in a bucket and right back to lfs.
