I have a hydros-5000y and it died in under 3 months, motor stalling. I had the same pump prior last 5 years. The only difference, I 'm now running ozone and it sucks in air from the poseidon with outdoor fresh air and through the impellor housing then into my reef octopus skimmer... Does anyone know if this is safe long term for impellor and motor?

Plastics in general are fairly ozone safe with only a few exceptions. The main exception here is Nylon, and it is possible (but unlikely) your pump impeller could be nylon.

Ozone degradation of plastics would cause them to break/crumble and crack. A broken piece could have seized up the rotor, cracks in the housing/plastics would be permanent and obvious so an inspection of the internals could reveal a cause.

Without knowing the exact materials of construction (I couldn't find your pump searching using the name you gave, they probably say "plastic" anyways which isn't very helpful in this concern). So without knowing exactly what, it's hard to say if it will be safe long term.

5 year old skimmer pump is pretty old though.

I used to use nylon and kynar plastic fittings for ozone applications. Both are rated specifically for ozone equipment. Ozone is used in skimmers to increase flocculation of proteins and organics pretty commonly in large zoos and aquariums.

I know ozone dissolves nylon, as it melted a nylon T I used to splice into the airline vinyl tubing.

I'm trying to get warranty repair. I don't see any dissolved parts, cracks or anything obvious on the impellor. I have no clue if the white spikes are nylon, ABS or other. They say the skimmer is ozone safe, but unclear on impellor. I wanted to see if anyone else runs ozone the same way and could say if it for sure can be the culprit, but it sounds unlikely.
