Will a protein skimmer remove chaetogro as soon as it’s added to the tank? Should you turn off the skimmer when adding? If so, how long before the macroalgae would uptake these trace elements?

Protein skimmers don’t really remove dissolved stuff as much as particulates which accumulate in the bubbles. Some will be carried out with the gunk but most won’t, imo. Let’s see if folks think otherwise?

I usually add chaetogro either during a feed time with pumps, skimmers etc. off- or switch off the skimmer for 10 minutes when adding outside of those times? Why? oh.. just always did!

Will be interesting to see some qualified answers! ;)

Don’t worry about the skimmer.

Are you adding CheatoGro for a reason or just as a precautionary measure?

I always find macros grow for some time and then start to slow or stop. Once adding chaetogro they start growing again. Seems they strip all of the elements needed for growth, particularly iron, once adding those back in it starts thriving again.

So the skimmer will not go crazy when adding this stuff in, pulling all of it out of the water column? Obviously some may be unavoidable, but I’d hate to spend money on fertilizer only for it to all get sucked up by the skimmer :)

I have had to turn my skimmer off every time I add chaetogro to my sump as my skimmer goes nuts so I leave my skimmer off for half an hour
