Hey guys, I have a hideous rock that used to have lots of corals on it but now are dead. The rock has no use anymore so can I just get rid of it? Can I get rid of it and add a new rock to balance it out. Any answers would be appreciated and thanks for your time

Unless this rock represents more than say 20% (number chosen somewhat arbitrarily) of your total live rock (home to the bacteria doing the nitrification work) my guess is you should be fine. You could add some new rock first and then remove the hideous one (pic might help, slightly unusual to have to remove rock from the display lol, I wanna see just HOW hideous it is)

You could also worry if you have a deep sand bed about all the detritus thats in the sand near the base that might be released with removing this rock.

it depends how much rock do you have relative to this rock? If you have many other pieces, removing this one will probably be ok

What is the size of your tank? How much rock and other biological filtration do you have in the system (tank and sump)? Do you have any room in your sump to move the rock there?

Well, u can remove this rock and put it in the sump for a few weeks while the new rock you put in the display is colonized with bacteria.

I have probably about 30 pounds of rock left if I remove the smaller rock, in a 40 gallon tank

I have a 40 gallon I have about 30 pounds of rock if I remove the small rock and a little marine pure block. Unfortunately there is no room left in the sump

Adding a rock and replacing the old one is what I think I want to go with. But no deep sand bed but I will do a water change when I remove that rock
