Will salt buildup inside a filter cartridge?

No. You might, over time, get a little salt buildup over parts of the filter assembley (not the filter itself, but the plastic that holds it) but this is very slow and gradual and visible and can be taken care of by scraping it back into the tank.

What do you plan to keep in a 10 gallon tank? This is very much at the smaller end for marine tanks and can be challenging to keep many of the corals and marine fish in, especially long term.

I plan to keep invertebrates (hermit crabs and snails), maybe a shrimp, and 2 damselfish. Right now the tank is cycling.
